Laser Treatments: Skin Resurfacing and Hair Removal for Las Vegas and St. George
In recent years, developing laser technology has made a host of exciting new cosmetic treatments possible. Lasers are invaluable for their precision, making it possible to address aesthetic flaws all over the body in ways that were previously impossible. Laser skin resurfacing and laser hair removal, available to Las Vegas and St. George-area residents at the practice of Dr. Robert Rhodes, are some of the most popular laser treatments being used today. Many patients choose to combine a laser treatment with non-surgical skin rejuvenation or with a surgical procedure such as a facelift. Please view our plastic surgery before-and-after pictures to see the benefits of these laser treatments for yourself.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment for wrinkles, acne, rosacea, age spots, and minor scars. When performing laser skin resurfacing for patients in the Las Vegas and St. George area, Dr. Rhodes treats the skin with a medical-grade handheld laser. The laser's energy dissolves the molecular bonds in damaged and aged outer layers of skin. These layers are stripped away to expose the fresher, healthier layers beneath. At the same time, the laser's energy stimulates the growth of collagen fibers in the skin. These fibers give the skin its elasticity, so additional fibers from laser skin resurfacing improve the skin's texture and overall appearance.
After laser skin resurfacing, some patients experience redness, swelling, and irritation – symptoms that resemble a sunburn. More serious side effects are rare, but occasionally patients do experience burns, scarring, or lasting changes in skin pigment as a result of laser skin resurfacing.
Most of Dr. Rhodes' patients from Las Vegas, St. George, and elsewhere heal in two weeks or less, though some experience lasting pinkness that persists for a few months. Patients who are bothered by this side effect can use makeup to conceal it. It is common for laser skin resurfacing patients to take a week or two away from work while their skin recovers from the procedure.

Fraxel® Laser Treatment
The Fraxel® laser is revolutionary, and the results it delivers are phenomenal. Unlike other laser skin resurfacing treatments, the Fraxel® laser uses precise laser beams to treat thousands of microscopic areas of skin during each session. The laser penetrates the surface of the skin, stimulating the body's natural healing process to eliminate damaged cells and replace them with healthy, fresh, glowing skin.
You can choose the level of Fraxel® laser treatment - aggressive or less aggressive - to fit your skin type and lifestyle. With aggressive treatment, amazing results can be achieved in just a few sessions, but will result a longer downtime with slight redness and swelling, and more possible side effects, than with less aggressive treatment. Less aggressive treatment will take more sessions to accomplish the same outstanding results, but with fewer side effects and less down time. We recommend gentle, and/or fewer treatments for certain skin types and conditions.
The Fraxel® laser has FDA clearance for numerous skin concerns. With Fraxel® treatment, you can expect fresher, smoother-looking skin, with reduced wrinkles around the eyes, improved pore size, enhanced tone and texture, and improved appearance of scars.

Laser Hair Removal
Unwanted or excessive hair growth is frustrating no matter where it occurs. Temporary solutions, such as shaving and waxing, are often messy and inconvenient. Laser hair removal is an effective way to gently and permanently reduce or eliminate unwanted hair almost anywhere on the face or body.
Laser hair removal requires Dr. Rhodes to treat the hair follicles with laser light using a high-precision handheld device. The energy of the laser causes the follicle to shut down, ceasing hair growth. Smaller areas can be treated in only a few minutes, while larger ones may require up to an hour. In most cases, patients need a series of these treatments to achieve a satisfactory result, as hair typically grows in cycles and laser hair removal is most effective when the hair is actively growing.
One of the biggest advantages of laser hair removal is its safety. Among Dr. Rhodes' Las Vegas and St. George-area patients, serious side effects are very rare. Some patients do experience burns when the skin absorbs the laser energy instead of the hair, which more often occurs when the patient has darker skin. Some patients also experience changes in skin pigmentation. These could take the form of hypopigmentation, in which the skin loses color, or hyperpigmentation, in which the skin darkens in a manner resembling a suntan.
Certain patients find that they need to maintain their results with an annual laser hair removal touch-up with Dr. Rhodes in St. George, northeast of Las Vegas. In most cases, though, laser hair removal is convenient, painless, and effective.
